Announcing the Annual Red Cloud Indian Art Show, June 3 - August 12, 2012

If you are a Native artist, and are interested in entering the 2012 Indian Art show at the Heritage Center, please read through the guidelines below. We are looking forward to seeing all of the talent on display this year!

Eligibility

Any enrolled tribal member of the Native Peoples of North America including Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and First Nations of Canada. Proof of enrollment (photocopy of Tribal ID, letter from tribe, etc.) must be included with entry form. Must be 18 years or older as of the first day of the Art Show. All works must be original and must have been produced by living artist within the past two years.

Deadlines

• If you intend to enter artwork in this show, please let us know by email or letter before May 1, how many works you intent to enter and in what division(s).

Artwork must be at Red Cloud Indian School by 5PM Mountain Time May 11, 2012.

• NO works will be accepted after this time.

Framing and Presentation

• All works must be gallery-ready. This includes matting and/or framing of two-dimensional artwork. No glass please, Plexiglas preferred. Hanging hardware will be attached by museum personnel.

• Works that do not meet these requirements will be included in the show, but The Heritage Center assumes no responsibility for damage due to improper preparation.

• Giclée, Iris or other digital photographic reproduction techniques are limited only to Division IV.

• All materials from protected species used must comply with all current laws and regulations of State and Federal agencies.

Artist Directory

The Heritage Center will be providing an artist directory for gallery visitors and online. The artist directory is an in-house publication that provides visitors with contact information. If you DO NOT wish to participate in the artist directory, please indicate when signing the entry form.

Photo Rights

The Heritage Center reserves the right to photograph any or all works submitted for this exhibit, for publicity and/or educational purposes. Images used for any of the mentioned purposes will be retained in The Heritage Center’s archives.

Sales

• All artwork must be for sale.

• A fee of 20% of the selling price of each piece will be collected by The Heritage Center to defray shipping and exhibit costs. The artist’s price should reflect this fee.

• If, in the judgment of the jurors, any entry has been purposely raised in price to avoid sale, it shall be rejected.

• All works must remain on exhibit until the end of the Art Show.

Insurance and Return

• The Heritage Center reserves the right to define an appropriate insurance value with the artist.

• The Art Show ends August 12, 2012 at 5PM. Artwork can be picked up starting August 13, 2012 at 8AM.

• All works must be picked up or shipment arranged by September 3, 2012. Please pick up or arrange shipment for your work before this date. The Heritage Center shall not be held responsible for loss, theft or damage to any artwork after this date.

• A signed authorization from the artist must be presented by anyone other then the Artist when picking up artwork.

• If you cannot pick up or arrange shipment on time please call the Curator at 605/867-5491 ext. 221 to make other arrangements.

• You have agreed to pay all shipping charges to The Heritage Center and for having your work returned to you if it does not sell.

Each artist may enter two pieces:

• For works using two or media in any mixed technique

Each artist may enter two pieces using any ONE of the following media in each:

• Hand pulled prints

Limited to editions of 50 or less

Signed and numbered

Each artist may enter two pieces using any ONE of the following media in each:

• Ceramics

• Pottery

• Sculpture

• Metal

• Wood

• Stone

Each artist may enter a total of four pieces with a maximum of two per division.

For all divisions: First prize, $200; Second prize, $150

Special Awards

Br. CM Simon, SJ Award: for artwork to be used in publications in the following year’s show $550

The Joëlle and Nicolas Rostkowski Award: for the best abstract painting $500

Diederich Award: for young artist whose work shows the greatest improvement $250

Diederich Award: for the best depiction of a traditional Lakota $250

Diederich Landscape Award $250: for the Black Hills / Badlands, no human figures

Diederich Landscape Award $250: for lakes, mountains, prairies, no human figures

Savage / Zuern Award: most innovative use of traditional methods and techniques $250

Allan and Joyce Niederman Award: for the most traditional painting $200

The Bonnie Erickson Award: for the best representation of children $150

The Francis Hornikel Award: for artwork depicting the best sense of humor $150

The Aplan Award: for the outstanding young artist $100

In Honor of Jim Gillihan Award: for the realistic rendering of a Native American on horseback $100

Oscar Howe Memorial Award: for the most cutting edge artwork $100

The Powers Award: for the best representation of Native American women $100

Tony Begay Memorial Award: most explicit development of an Native American theme $50

The Bill and Sue Hensler Award: for the traditional representation in sculpture $50

The ML Woodard Award: for the painting, drawing/sketch depicting the most developed Native American theme $50

In addition to the above merit awards, $2000 has been provided for purchase awards. Purchased works become part of the permanent collection of The Heritage Center at Red Cloud School, Inc.
