2012 Cheer Camp a Success

The music of Lou Bega and Britney Spears blared through the high school student commons, as girls of all ages practiced their turns and high-kicks. So went the annual Red Cloud cheer camp, in which students from the elementary school got to show off their moves alongside the high school cheerleaders. Now in its fourth year, the camp was started by cheerleaders from the class of 2010 in order to interact with the younger students, and give interested girls a chance to see the rigor, discipline, and camaraderie of high school-level cheerleading firsthand.

This year’s cheer camp was one of the biggest yet, with 73 Kindergarten-eighth grade students – 37 from Red Cloud elementary and 36 from Our Lady of Lourdes – taking part. The event was facilitated by high school cheerleaders Sierra Concha, Kylie I’atala, Carlee Janis, Tayler Morgan, and LaShell Poor Bear. Practices were held both at Our Lady of Lourdes, and in the high school for the students on the main campus. A good time was held by all. Senior Tayler Morgan found it very rewarding, saying: “It was really enjoyable to teach young girls who look up to you.”

The two school groups performed individually at two elementary-level basketball games, but the big performance is yet to come. On Friday night, the entire assembled squad of 73 elementary and middle school students will perform a routine alongside their high school counterparts, before the varsity boys’ basketball game against St. Francis Indian School. This will be the last home game of the boys’ regular season. All local Crusaders fans are encouraged to come out to support both the cheer camp girls and the basketball players!
